Position Summary

Under department leadership, the Fire Technician - Apprentice will support client and internal site operations by developing experience in fire extinguisher inspections and repair.  The Apprentice will build hands-on experience and education to support sitting for and passing the state Type B Fire Extinguisher License.  Expertise built will afford the Apprentice the ability to work independently, offer support to the team and successfully support the organization as a Fire Technician.

Essential Responsibilities, includes but are not limited to

  • Build knowledge of and adhere to fire service department best practices, SOPs and safety requirements.
  • Shadow and take direction from senior technicians and department supervisor to support training and development. Develop experience in and master inspecting, repairing, and testing fire extinguishers using hand tools, and monitoring devices.
  • Develop experience in and master dismantling extinguishers and examining mechanical parts, extinguishing agents, and expelling means; replacing worn or damaged parts.
  • Develop experience in and master cleaning extinguishers and recharging them with approved materials.
  • Assist in fire safety inspection.
  • Visit customer sites for inspections and/or repair.
  • Account for and document fire service repair and inspection activity.
  • Travel to support local and intrastate turnaround activity including stock and roll activity.

Qualifications

  • Minimum High School Diploma or equivalent. 
  • Must obtain a State of Texas Type B Fire Extinguisher License within 60 days of hire. 
  • 3 plus years work experience in a plant or fire safety environment. Previous fire service experience preferred.
  • Current TWIC Card.
  • Willingness and ability to develop skills in inspection, repair, maintenance and testing techniques for fire safety equipment and systems.
  • Willingness to develop experience in fire suppression.
  • Must be the age of 23 or older.
  • Valid driver’s license with clean driver’s abstract.
  • Competent computer skills.
  • Ability to communicate verbally and in writing effectively. 
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Must be flexible to work long hours including on-call, weekends and holiday schedule.
  • Willingness to travel a must.
  • *All inspections, repairs and maintenance on fire extinguishers and systems is performed in accordance with NFPA-10

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

This is a full time - direct hire employment opportunity.  The employee must be willing to work weekends and holidays as needed. Overnight travel likely. Additional hours may be needed. On-call availability required.
